In the Battle for La Croce Hill, the rugged terrain kept the Allied Forces from using heavy weapons. The 100th would fight to the hilltops, only to be driven back down by the waiting Germans. Only by perseverance and after suffering heavy losses did the 100th finally manage to take the hills. During the battle for La Croce, Major Gillespie was hosptialized and replaced by Major Caspar Clough as the 100th commander.
