Hideo Akiyama (Co. C, 100th Inf. Bn.), was a replacement to the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
Akiyama took his induction physical in March 1943, and was sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for basic training with the 442nd RCT. In Italy, he was assigned to Company C of the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate).
On July 9, 1944, Akiyama was wounded on the right side of his abdomen and right thigh while his unit was in combat near the town of Casale, Italy. He died the following day at the field hospital.
Eight letters written by Hideo Akiyama to his niece and two nephews were preserved. All were written before he was shipped to Italy.
